Portuguese comfort food in the heart of Manhattan

Old meets new at this Chelsea restaurant
Quiz: What do you get when you mix a Portuguese cervejaria (a brewery that serves food), a smartly designed Chelsea restaurant, a Michelin-starred chef, the freshest seasonal ingredients and the vibe of a neighborhood hangout? Answer: Lupulo, a restaurant and bar where Old World meets New, Lisboa meets Manhattan, salt cod meets American craft beer.
Lisbon is the oldest city in Europe, and at Lupulo, you can taste the tradition in every dish of rustic Portuguese comfort food, masterfully prepared by Chef-Owner George Mendes. Relax at a table topped with handmade, imported tiles or at the wrap-around bar while sampling crowd favorite frango piri-piri, an ember-charred organic young chicken with a bold pepper sauce. Or tuck into oven-baked octopus rice, shrimp porridge with a soft hen egg, or leg of lamb cooked over charcoal. Bring friends and pass the petiscos, tapas-style small plates, like bolinhos de bacalhau, salt cod croquettes; rissóis de camarão, crispy shrimp turnovers; or patê de carapau, a mackerel spread with toast.
A carefully curated beverage menu of craft beers (Lupulo means "hops" in Portuguese), Portuguese wines, and simple cocktails pairs perfectly with Chef Mendes' dishes. So raise a glass: Saúde!
